Cryogenic valves for the temperature range below -150°C which is the mark of our design for the safe transport of liquefied gases like LNG, liquid oxygen, nitrogen, helium, and hydrogen. As a leader in the field of Cryogenic Valves Manufacturers in India, Speciality valve have put our expertise into the development of valves which not only survive the cold but also do not fail and perform at their best in the harshest industrial gas settings.
These in cryogenic applications which include storage tanks, LNG vaporizers, cryocoolers, and cryostats we have that standard valves do not fare well due to material brittess. In the areas of cryogenic safety valves and cryogenic globe valves we see a large variety of products also in cryogenic check valves and cryogenic ball valves that Indian manufacturers bring to the market which are used in industries like energy, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, and natural gas transport.
What is a Cryogenic Valve?
A cryogenic valve is a type of industrial valve which we use for the control, regulation and isolation of cryogenic liquids and gases. Also we note that materials like stainless steel, carbon steel or ductile iron are used in their construction for the valves’ durability at very low temperatures which also precludes fractures.
Cryogenic valves that which standard valves do not apply to, have extended bonnets in their design which in turn put the stem packing at a distance from the cold fluid to prevent ice formation and which in turn maintains sealing integrity.
Cryogenic Valve Working Principle
In the cryogenics field we see that our valves’ function is to control very low temp fluids which do not see heat transfer that causes vaporization. Also we note that they are either top entry or side entry which in turn allows for maintenance to be done without the valve coming out of the pipeline.
The valve stem is out which is to say that the actuator or handwheel is separated from the cryogenic fluid. Valve seats and seals are of PTFE, PCTFE, or other cryogenic compatible materials. In operation:
- Fluid enters the valve body.
- Pneumatic and manual transmission units operate the valve disc, ball, or gate.
- Flow is managed and at the same time ice formation is stopped in the packing area.
- Smooth closure that in turn causes minimal pressure drop and also precludes flashing.
Cryogenic Valve Types
- Cryogenic valves that give a quick on/off action with low pressure drop.
- Cryogenic Globe Valves: Exact control of flow.
- Cryogenic valves for full isolation.
- Cryogenic check valves for preventing backflow.
- Cryogenic Pressure Release Valve which protects against overpressure.
- Piston valves are known for tight shut off and zero leakage.
Cryogenic Valve Applications
Cryogenic valves present in many industries that work with industrial gases and liquefied fuels.
- LNG storage tanks and tankers.
- Cryogenic vaporisers (water bath, forced, fired).
- Cryogenic cylinders and liquid cylinders.
- Natural gas booster stations.
- Cryogenic skids in chemical plants.
- Propellants in aerospace and rocket propulsion.
- Cryogenic pump and pipeline isolation.
Cryogenic Valve vs Non-Cryogenic Valve
Feature | Cryogenic Valve | Non-Cryogenic Valve |
Temperature Range | Operates at -196°C to ambient | Operates at ambient or elevated temperatures |
Materials | Stainless steel, carbon steel, PCTFE seats | Brass, bronze, standard elastomers |
Design | Extended bonnet, cryogenic-tested seals | Standard bonnet, standard seals |
Applications | LNG, LOX, liquid hydrogen, cryogenic storage | Water, steam, oil, and general fluids |
Pressure Handling | Designed for high-pressure cold fluids | General pressure ranges |
Maintenance | Needs cryogenic-specific testing & cleaning | Easier maintenance with general tools |
Key Components of Cryogenic Valves
- Valve Body is made of stainless or carbon steel.
- Valve Seats PTFE for cold temp sealing.
- Extended Bonnet – Prevents stem icing.
- Actuator – Manual, pneumatic, or electric.
- Seals & Gaskets – Cryogenic-rated materials.
- Stem and Gate/Ball/Disc finished for low friction.
- At low temperatures, to prevent leaks.
Industrial Uses of Cryogenic Valves
- LNG movement between terminals and storage tanks.
- Isolation in industrial gases cryogenic pipelines.
- Regulating liquid nitrogen in food processing.
- Cryogenic pressure safety for tank overpressure.
- In low temperature reactors and fuel tanks in aerospace.
- Handling cryogenic liquids in pharmaceutical freezing.
- Controlling liquid oxygen supply in hospitals.
- In cryogenics at gas cylinder filling stations.
Cryogenic valves are included in the same group as Industrial valves, gate valves, globe valves, ball valves, check valves, and butterfly valves which are common in the field. Also we have from manufacturers solenoid valves, piston valves and thermal relief valves for related applications.
